ALZHEIMERS DEMENTIA | DR PETER RABINS

Nov 17, 2021

An estimated 6.2 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2021, which breaks down to 1 in 9 people age 65 and older, and those numbers will increase substantially over the next few years as the population ages. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affect a person's ability to function independently. On this episode of Free Thinking, Montel talks with an emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Dr. Peter Rabins. Dr. Rabins was the founding director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry and the first holder of the Richman Family Chair in Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders. He has published more than 300 articles and book chapters and is an author or co-author of 8 books including The 36-Hour Day, Practical Dementia Care, The Why of Things, and Getting Old without Getting Anxious.
